On World Food Day, celebrated on October 16th, EduQA – Institute of Education, Quality and Evaluation, IP publishes the document Guidelines for School Menus and Canteens 2026 , an updated technical reference aimed at supporting schools, municipalities and other entities responsible for school meals in promoting healthier, more sustainable meals that are better suited to the needs of children and young people.
Prepared in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Health (DGS), through the National Program for the Promotion of Healthy Eating (PNPAS), the document updates previously published guidelines and incorporates the latest scientific evidence in the areas of food, nutrition and public health.
The document reinforces the presence of plant-based foods in school menus, in line with the principles of healthy eating and the Mediterranean Diet, while simultaneously promoting the nutritional quality of meals, sustainability, and the enhancement of school cafeterias as spaces for food education.
With this publication, EduQA and DGS reaffirm their commitment to promoting the health, well-being, and educational success of children and young people.
The launch on World Food Day underscores the role of public policies in creating healthy food environments and protecting the health of children and young people.
