Portuguese students Afonso Tavares, from Colégio Vasco da Gama, and Vasco Leal, from Escola Secundária de Alcochete, won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the XXXIV International Philosophy Olympiad, held in Warsaw between May 14 and 17, 2026.
The competition brought together representatives from 56 countries, totaling approximately 120 students and 120 teachers. The test consisted of writing a philosophical essay in English, within a four-hour timeframe, which was subsequently evaluated in two phases by an international jury. In a third phase, an international scientific committee selected the best essays and awarded the medals.
The Portuguese delegation also included Philosophy professors Vera Vicente and Domingos Correia, who participated in the work of the international jury.
The students were selected through a national competition organized by the Prosofos association.
