Portuguese students win silver medals at the 2026 European Science Olympiad.

EOES 2026

Portugal won silver medals at the 2026 European Science and Engineering Olympiad (EOES), also achieving 4th place in the overall cumulative ranking over the last three years among 23 participating countries. The competition took place between May 2nd and 9th in Lund, Sweden.

The students who represented the country were: Dinis Teixeira (Afonso de Albuquerque Secondary School, Guarda), Leonardo Aires and Afonso Inácio (Dr. Mário Sacramento Secondary School, Aveiro), Hugo Noronha (José Falcão Secondary School, Coimbra) and Eduardo Cadete and Rita Morais (Colégio Moderno, Lisbon).

The European Science Olympiad (EOES) brings together 144 students from 23 European countries, all under 17 years old, constituting a healthy scientific competition focused on experimental and laboratory work in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Beyond the competitive aspect, these Olympiads represent an important moment for comparing European curricula in the field of experimental sciences.

The preparation of the national teams was coordinated by Catarina Ramos (EduQA), with contributions from mentors José Esperança (Chemistry, LAQV, NOVA FCT), João Cruz (Physics, LIBPhys, NOVA FCT) and Pedro Oliveira (Biology, Order of Biologists), in conjunction with their respective scientific societies.

The excellent performance achieved is a source of pride, reflecting the students' commitment and the collaborative work developed by EduQA and the mentors, representatives of the Portuguese Physics Society, the Portuguese Chemistry Society, and the Order of Biologists, who were responsible for their preparation.

Congratulations are extended to all participants and entities involved for the success achieved and for the contribution to the affirmation of experimental science education in Portugal.
