How can longitudinal data contribute to a better understanding of educational inequalities in Europe? What opportunities do existing datasets offer for comparative research, and what challenges remain to be overcome?
These issues will be at the heart of the in-person seminar “Understanding Educational Inequalities through Longitudinal Data: Join the LINEup Seminar in Lisbon”, organized by the LINEup project, in collaboration with UTAD and hosted by EduQA, which will take place on October 16, 2026, in Lisbon.
The seminar will provide an opportunity to present the main results achieved by the LINEup project over the past three years and to discuss how these results can strengthen both research and evidence-based public policy formulation. Bringing together researchers, policymakers and representatives of public institutions linked to education and data collection, the event will promote a dialogue on the future of comparative longitudinal research in Europe.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the project's key results, including the European mapping of longitudinal databases, the LINEup Education Data Explorer, and the work developed in the field of data harmonization. Together, these resources provide an unprecedented overview of the European longitudinal data landscape and support more robust comparative research on educational inequalities.
The seminar will also feature national case studies from Greece, Portugal, and Spain, illustrating how existing longitudinal data can be used to analyze educational trajectories, while simultaneously highlighting the methodological, institutional, and governance challenges that continue to limit its full potential.
The event will conclude with a reflection on the future scenarios identified in the LINEup feasibility study and on the paths that could lead to a stronger and more integrated European infrastructure for longitudinal research in education.
