Education in Portugal: challenges, evidence and opportunities

Cartaz informativo do evento "Educação em Portugal: desafios, evidências e oportunidades - Reflexões a partir do PISA 2025", que terá lugar no dia 12 de setembro de 2026, às 09:30h, no Teatro Thalia.

Based on the national results of the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the Institute for Education, Quality and Assessment (EduQA), in partnership with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is promoting a meeting entitled "Education in Portugal: challenges, evidence and opportunities" on September 12th at the Thalia Theatre in Lisbon.

The objectives of this meeting are to present the results achieved by Portuguese students who participated last year in this international education study conducted by the OECD, and also to launch a debate around the challenges and opportunities that open up for national education policies, based on the evidence provided by the study.

To that end, the meeting will provide an initial opportunity to present the national results, delivered by Anabela Serrão, a member of the EduQA Board of Directors, and by a presentation from Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education and Skills at the OECD.

This will be followed by an open discussion period, involving a round table and audience participation.

The closing session, still in the morning, will be led by Fernando Alexandre, Minister of Education, Science and Innovation.

PISA allows us to understand the skills and knowledge that 15-year-old students possess in the areas of mathematics, reading, and science, also focusing on their ability to solve problems collaboratively, their financial literacy, and their critical thinking.

In each cycle of the study, emphasis is placed on one of the assessment domains (reading, mathematics or science), with the 2025 edition focusing on science.
